This week, I worked with various teachers and students in preparation for the start of my workshops next week! I met with my former biology teacher to talk about how to interactively teach about the teenage brain, and she suggested two other contacts that could help me (another teacher at our school, and a neuroscience graduate program). Through the teacher contact she suggested, I got connected to a classmate that has been working on a brain health project outside of school. I'm starting to realize that the possibilities and connections that can relate to this project are endless! I'm invigorated by the amount of support and direction I'm getting by everyone who wants to help this project happen.
The most exciting step in the direction of making this project a reality has been meeting with Ms. Crump, the engineering teacher and leader of the Girl Alliance League (GAL) at High Tech Middle Chula Vista. We've been meeting to finalize my plans for my workshops in GAL.
This morning, I went to HTMCV's X-block pitch assembly. X-block is the name for the elective class period at the end of each school day. Teachers pitch their X-Block classes before the entire student body and the students declare their preferences. Because I'm working with Ms. Crump, I pitched GAL with her in front of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.

After this, I met with another teacher, Mr. Macalagium, who is helping me share my project with other teachers both in and out of High Tech High. Now, I'm working on collecting materials for my lock-in (which has been officially approved!). Mr. Mac is helping me reach out to get donations for my project.
I also spoke to Kiera, the owner of PeaceBeneathHerFeet.com , and got an invitation to post about my project on her blog, which is internationally viewed.
In addition, I sent my project itinerary and outline to Dr. Kakaiya's interns, who have all previously worked with young adolescent girls on related topics. I asked for their feedback on my outline and asked for suggestions to make my workshops as fun and effective as possible!
I've also started connecting with some student who would be willing to help lead certain components of the lock-in in February. My goal is to have a group of student leaders, a photographer/ documentarian, and an artist to help me with the aesthetic component of this project.
Everything has come together, and now it's time for execution!
More to come soon!
